Students develop the knowledge and skills necessary to work with at-risk and offender populations in a range of institutional and community correctional programs operating within and alongside the justice system. The program curriculum integrates theoretical foundations with applied, experiential, and work-integrated learning opportunities, ensuring graduates are well-prepared with practical, job-ready skills.
Coursework emphasizes key industry areas such as human rights, equity and inclusion, and advocacy; interpersonal and professional communication; client and case management; and programming and interventions that promote mental health, wellness, and resiliency. Instruction is delivered by faculty with extensive industry experience and is enriched by contributions from subject matter experts who bring current, real-world insights to the classroom.
The program maintains strong community partnerships that provide students with opportunities to participate in meaningful community projects and experiential learning activities. In the second year, students complete a seven-week immersive field placement within a community- or custody-based justice agency, supporting a smooth transition from academic study to professional practice.
Graduates may pursue careers in federal and provincial correctional institutions, community residential facilities, open and secure custody facilities for youth, early intervention and rehabilitation programs, school environments, and community-based justice and advocacy organizations that serve offenders, individuals at risk, and victims of crime.
