Master of Science - Counselling (Children and Young People)

The MSc Counselling (Children and Young People) is designed to meet the professional accreditation requirements for counselling children and young people. It enables successful graduates, who have also completed all required practice components, to progress towards accreditation with the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP).

On completion of the course, graduates demonstrate strong practical counselling competence, allowing them to complete the BACP Certificate of Proficiency and apply for BACP registration. The qualification, alongside BACP registration, supports employment as a counsellor specialising in work with children and young people while progressing towards full professional accreditation.

The course includes a minimum of 100 hours of supervised client practice. In the first year, students have the option to undertake a placement working with adult clients, helping them develop skills relevant to working with parents, which is an important aspect of child counselling. There is also an opportunity to gain additional experience in adult counselling, with support from the course team in securing appropriate placements.

In the second year, students work with children of both primary and secondary school age, ensuring a broad range of practical experience. Placements are typically arranged with local partner organisations and are closely supported and monitored by experienced staff, all of whom are qualified child counsellors and psychotherapists. Course and placement structures ensure that all practice is carried out safely and in line with the BACP ethical framework.

Teaching combines theory and practice, with a strong focus on developing key counselling skills and competencies. Students are supported through supervision, case formulation, and discussion, alongside learning approaches that include play and creative media. The course also provides an in-depth exploration of the professional knowledge base required for child counselling, enabling graduates to develop the skills and competence needed for professional practice.
