The Associate of Science Degree in Mathematics provides students with knowledge of the study of quantity, structure, space, and change. It also prepares students to pursue a Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics or a related field. Mathematics is a diverse discipline that deals with data, measurement, inference, deduction, observation, and proof. Students will acquire knowledge of revealing and explaining patterns from analyzing fluctuations of the stock market to impulses of the human nervous system.
Students in this program will complete 20 courses at the first and second year levels, including: • Two courses in first year English (one Composition course and one Literature course.) • Two courses in Mathematics including at least one course in Calculus. • Twelve courses, including at least six at the second year level (in at least two different subject areas) in Science including at least one course in a Laboratory Science. • Two courses in Arts other than English. • Two courses in Arts, Science or other areas.
Students in this program complete all the requirements for an Associate of Science Degree (as specified above) but include among their selected courses: • First year Calculus (MATH 113 and 114) • Discrete Mathematics (MATH 120) • Three courses in Mathematics at the second year level. These will be Calculus III (MATH 213), Analysis I (MATH 225) and Linear Algebra and Differential Equations (MATH 252) • Two Computer Science courses, Introduction to Computer Science and Programming I and II (CSCI 120 and 125)
(Completion of this Degree fulfills the requirements for a Flexible Pre-major in Mathematics.)
