Astronomy Instrumentation is a specialised research area within the Physics and Astronomy postgraduate research programmes (PhD), focusing on the development of advanced technologies for astronomical observation and analysis. The Astronomy Instrumentation Group is internationally recognised for designing and delivering cutting-edge instruments that support major space missions and address current scientific challenges in astrophysics.
The group has played a significant role in high-profile projects such as the Herschel and Planck space telescopes, contributing to both instrument development and the ongoing analysis of scientific data. Its work includes the design of innovative optical and detection technologies, enabling precise measurements in far-infrared astronomy and cosmic microwave background studies. Research is conducted within a collaborative team of academic staff, postdoctoral researchers, and PhD students, supported by specialist technical expertise.
Students benefit from access to advanced facilities, including well-equipped laboratories, cleanroom environments, engineering workshops, and high-performance computing resources. This combination of technical infrastructure and research expertise provides a strong foundation for developing skills in instrumentation, experimental physics, and data analysis within a leading research environment.
