Acupuncture is a health practice and component of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), a complete health care system approach to treating and preventing disease. Practiced for thousands of years, acupuncture has gained more attention as an alternative and complementary treatment choice in western culture, creating excellent career opportunities. In addition to acupuncture, TCM also includes Chinese herbology, diet therapy, tuina, and specific exercises such as tai chi and qigong.
Provincial Registration MacEwan University's Acupuncture program prepares students to become a Registered Acupuncturist in Alberta, subject to successful completion of the provincial registration examination administered by the College and Association of Acupuncturists of Alberta (CAAA). This curriculum is based on the latest national and international standards of competency, ensuring that their skills and knowledge are global.
Acupuncture in Practice Acupuncturists work with the body’s energy that flows along well-defined pathways called meridians. Disease and health disorders are viewed as an imbalance of energy. Acupuncturists aim to prevent or treat illness by inserting very thin needles at specific points along the body’s various meridians, normalizing the energy flow.
Modern scientific study has confirmed that Acupuncture induces biochemical changes in the body that have beneficial effects and can facilitate healing
