The Master’s by Research (MRes) is a flexible research training programme designed to provide graduates with a strong foundation for careers in research, business, the third sector, government, or academia. It serves as a research-led qualification that bridges the gap between taught Master’s degrees and doctoral study, such as a PhD or DBA.
Students benefit from high-quality training in research methods and practice, with an emphasis on methodological rigour, the development of independent research capabilities, and applied research experience. The programme also supports the development of transferable skills relevant to careers in business and management.
The course offers significant flexibility, allowing students to tailor their learning to their individual interests and specialise in a particular business sub-discipline. It adopts a broad interpretation of Business and Management research, aligned with the 2021 Research Excellence Framework.
Research areas available within the programme include, but are not limited to, accounting, banking, business analytics, business and industrial economics, business ethics, business history, consumer behaviour, corporate governance, corporate social responsibility, critical management studies, employment relations, entrepreneurship, finance, human resource management, information systems management, innovation management, international business, leadership, management education, management science, marketing, operations management, organisational psychology, organisational studies, project management, public policy, public sector management, risk management, service management, small firms, strategic management, supply chain management, sustainability, technology management, and third sector management, along with other related fields.
Students explore a range of quantitative and qualitative research techniques to gain insights into their chosen subject areas. They also work within a multidisciplinary environment, studying alongside experienced researchers and business practitioners.
The programme is suitable for individuals from diverse backgrounds, although applicants are expected to have some prior understanding of business and management, either through a relevant undergraduate degree or professional experience. In collaboration with a supervisor, each student designs and undertakes a non-credit-bearing programme of supporting studies tailored to their specific research needs.
As part of Birmingham City University (BCU), MRes students join a dynamic research community focused on advanced training and innovation. The programme equips emerging researchers with the skills and knowledge required to address complex challenges in business and management, while fostering the ability to apply research outcomes to real-world contexts.
