Astronomy, the oldest of the sciences, is a physical science that has been central in the development of modern scientific thought. This discipline explores the universe at large and the physical processes that govern it. Modern astronomers, guided by an understanding of the physical laws of nature, conduct research using advanced observational and computational technology to determine the physical properties, behavior, composition, and evolution of astronomical phenomena. They use observations and theory to describe and understand a broad range of subjects that includes: planets, comets, stars, pulsars, black holes, nebulae, galaxies, quasars, and the origin and evolution of the universe.
Some areas of study in astronomy include the sun, the solar system, stars and stellar evolution, the Milky Way, galaxies, and cosmology. Astronomers work for educational institutions as professors and researchers, for government agencies, and in space industries.
Program Student Learning Outcome: • Develop mathematical skills, acquire physics knowledge, and practice applying these skills and knowledge in astrophysical situations.
