Oral and Biomedical Sciences is a specialised research area within the Dentistry postgraduate research programmes (PhD), offering students the opportunity to engage in advanced research across a range of biological and clinical topics. The programme provides strong academic support and expertise, enabling students to develop their research within a multidisciplinary environment.
Research areas include the study of extracellular matrices and their role in tissue structure and function, wound healing processes, and the biology of mineralised tissues. Additional areas of focus include the identification of disease biomarkers, microbiology and biofilm research, and the development of bioactive and polymer-based biomaterials. The programme also incorporates aspects of engineering, such as finite element analysis and biomechanical modelling, to better understand biological systems and improve clinical applications.
Students benefit from access to diverse research projects and methodologies, combining biological sciences, materials science, and engineering approaches. This integrated research environment supports the development of skills relevant to careers in academia, healthcare, and biomedical research.
