The BSc (Hons) Psychology and Counselling degree provides a strong foundation for those interested in understanding human behaviour, supporting mental health, and pursuing careers in psychology and counselling-related professions. The course combines 60% psychology and 40% counselling, offering a balanced and integrated approach to both disciplines.
Accredited by the British Psychological Society (BPS), the programme supports progression into further professional training and postgraduate study. It is particularly suited to those considering careers as counsellors, psychotherapists, counselling psychologists, or other roles within the mental health and wellbeing sector.
Teaching is interactive and practice-focused, with opportunities for group work, class discussions, and counselling skills development. Students gain experience working collaboratively while building confidence in applying their knowledge to real-world situations.
The course covers core psychological theory, research methods, and counselling approaches, alongside a strong emphasis on ethical practice. This combination enables students to develop analytical, research, and interpersonal skills that are highly valued across a range of careers and further study pathways.
Students are taught by experienced psychologists and qualified counsellors, ensuring that learning is closely aligned with professional practice. Teaching methods include lectures, seminars, and online learning activities, supported by recorded content to encourage independent study and the development of skills required for postgraduate education.
Throughout the course, modules are designed to connect psychology and counselling in meaningful ways. In the first year, students are introduced to counselling concepts, personal development, and self-awareness, alongside contemporary issues in counselling theory. The second year focuses on interpersonal relationships, communication, emotional regulation, mental health conditions, and managing distress. In the final year, students apply counselling theories in practice, further developing professional communication, ethical understanding, and cultural awareness.
To enhance employability, students have the opportunity to undertake an optional professional placement year between the second and third years of study. This placement, which students are responsible for securing with support from university staff, provides valuable experience in industrial or research settings, although it is not guaranteed. Students who undertake a placement year can transfer to the relevant course pathway and will pay a reduced fee during this period.
