Master of Architecture - Architecture

The MArch (RIBA Part 2) programme represents the second stage of professional training for those pursuing a career in architecture. It is designed to develop students’ critical thinking, creative abilities, and technical skills through teaching delivered by both academic staff and industry professionals.

The programme extends beyond the requirements set by professional bodies, offering a dynamic and engaging postgraduate educational experience. Students work within a design studio-led, research-focused environment, enabling them to produce architectural designs that balance technical precision with aesthetic quality.

The course also provides a range of international opportunities, with students undertaking fieldwork in cities such as Reykjavik, Istanbul, Amsterdam, and Barcelona. An annual study visit to New York, sponsored by Ibstock Brick, further enhances global exposure.

Students are encouraged to engage in research projects, supported by strong institutional and industry connections that help showcase their work. For example, a graduate’s final thesis project has been featured on the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) website in New York.

The Birmingham School of Architecture and Design benefits from strong alumni networks and links to local creative and professional communities, supported by visiting tutors and critics. In addition, the School’s Co.LAB initiative offers opportunities to work on live, collaborative projects with partner organisations, including schools and charities. Recent projects have included work on listed 1930s structures at Dudley Zoological Gardens in collaboration with students from the School of Art.
