The Social Sciences PhD programme offers a comprehensive and interdisciplinary research environment, supported by a strong academic community and expert supervision across a wide range of subject areas. The programme emphasises rigorous research training and the development of theoretically informed work that contributes to both academic knowledge and policy debates. Students can undertake their studies on a full-time or part-time basis, allowing flexibility to suit different needs and career stages.
Research within the School spans several key themes, including children and young people, crime and justice, education and labour markets, inequalities and diversity, culture and everyday life, and science and technology. The programme encourages interdisciplinary approaches, enabling students to explore complex social issues from multiple perspectives. Strong collaborations with international institutions, policymakers, and practitioners further enhance the relevance and impact of research.
Students become part of a large and active postgraduate community, benefiting from a range of academic and professional development opportunities. These include participation in research groups, seminars, and informal study networks, as well as access to structured training in research methods and transferable skills. The School also provides dedicated study facilities, opportunities for funded research, and engagement with initiatives such as the ESRC-funded Wales Doctoral Training Partnership, supporting students throughout their doctoral journey and preparing them for careers in academia and beyond.
