Bachelor of Arts - Icelandic (Program Major)

Students can explore the rich and thrilling history of Icelandic arts and culture, language, mythology, history and theory in North America's only Icelandic study program.

Students can delve into the study of Icelandic and gain a better understanding and appreciation of the indispensable role of the country's culture. Studying Icelandic prepares them for career opportunities in interpretation, translation, teaching, research, writing and communications.

The program actively promotes North American-Icelandic history and culture. It has served to highlight the cultural contribution of Icelandic-Canadians to North America, and the curriculum includes courses dealing exclusively with Icelandic-Canadian literature and the poetics of immigration.

Courses offer a glimpse into the mindset of those pre-Christian settlers, their mythology, society and worldview. Students can learn about the contributions Icelandic immigrants played in the establishment of Manitoba: the impact in politics, religion, in producing art and in international espionage.
