3-Term Pathway - International Year One in Economics - Continue to Bachelor of Arts (Honours) - Financial Economics (Year Abroad)

Program Description For students that completed high school with good grades but don’t qualify for entry to an undergraduate degree, they could study an International Year One, which combines university preparation with degree 1st year. After completing this pathway option students qualify for progression to the 2nd year of an undergraduate degree at the University of Essex. This delivery option includes 2 terms of modules, and a 1 term internship. Students’ course length is determined mainly by their English language level (UKVI IELTS score). Students on all course lengths take a set of common or similar modules to gain a solid base of skills for university. If the course is longer than 2 terms, they’ll take additional modules designed to improve one or more of their English language level, academic skills, and basic knowledge of particular subjects. Bachelor of Arts (Honours) - Financial Economics

This course is built on the core principles of economics, which are applied to students’ study of financial institutions (such as banks), financial markets (such as the stock exchange), and financial instruments. Students receive a thorough introduction to economics and mathematics, as well as training in quantitative research methods.

They study the mathematical and statistical analysis of economic problems, and how the financial system functions, choosing from a range of topics on financial economics including:

• Fundamentals of accounting • Business strategy and competition • Capital markets • Financial innovations and new forms of transaction media • Bonds and contracts

The Department is rated consistently highly for student satisfaction and is top 5 in the UK for research, with over 90% of the research rated as “world-leading” or “internationally excellent” (REF 2014).

Studying financial economics provides students with a foundation in economics, developing into a deep understanding of how the financial system works and the ways in which it affects our lives. By studying this course, students graduate with a strong training in financial economics.
