Physical Organic Chemistry is a specialised research area within the Chemistry postgraduate research programmes, focusing on the design and synthesis of molecules with specific functions and the detailed study of their properties, reactions, and interactions. The research combines synthetic organic chemistry with physical and quantitative analysis to understand how molecular behaviour can be tailored for practical applications.
The research covers a diverse range of topics, including the development of new catalytic methods, the study of organic reactions in biological and aqueous environments, the design of biosensors and functional molecular systems, and the use of automated and machine learning-driven approaches to investigate chemical reactivity. It also includes biophysical testing of potential pharmaceutical compounds. Experimental work is supported by a wide range of techniques, such as spectroscopy, chromatography, kinetic studies, and advanced instrumentation, alongside the development of custom equipment and computational tools.
A key feature of the programme is its interdisciplinary approach, combining laboratory research with data analysis, software development, and quantitative modelling. Students receive broad training in areas such as organic synthesis, analytical and biophysical methods, data analysis, and programming. The research group maintains strong collaborations across multiple disciplines and international institutions, providing a rich and collaborative environment for developing innovative research projects tailored to individual interests and expertise.
