Bachelor of Arts (Honours) - Business Management and Finance

University of Derby - Derby

What you will study

The BA (Hons) Business Management and Finance combines strong financial expertise with core business management knowledge to prepare graduates for successful careers in a wide range of organisations. Effective financial management is central to business success, and this course develops the ability to deliver practical, informed solutions that support organisational performance and long-term growth.

The programme builds specialist skills in financial analysis, forecasting and projections, enabling graduates to confidently assess the financial health of organisations, manage and coordinate financial resources, and understand key aspects of corporate governance and performance management. Learning is applied and practice-focused, with students engaging in live projects, business simulations, consultancy work and topical case studies that bridge the gap between theory and real-world application.

The course is developed in close consultation with the Chartered Management Institute (CMI) and is one of the few degrees in the UK that allows students to graduate with the CMI Level 5 Diploma in Management and Leadership alongside the degree, with no additional assessments required. This professionally recognised qualification supports full CMI membership and provides a clear pathway towards Chartered Manager status. Students also benefit from affiliate membership of the CMI throughout their studies, with access to professional networks, mentoring, events and online resources.

For those with a strong interest in finance, the programme offers optional modules that provide exemptions from selected Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA) professional papers, offering a valuable head start towards qualification as a chartered management accountant. International perspectives further enrich the course through a diverse student community, global case studies, online guest lectures and opportunities for study exchanges and overseas field trips, including visits to academic partners and industry sites.

Practical learning is reinforced through employer-led projects and live consultancy experiences, where students work with organisations to improve business performance while developing advanced skills in financial analysis, research, project management, problem-solving and decision-making. Optional placement years or summer internships are encouraged and supported, giving students the opportunity to gain valuable industry experience and enhance employability before graduation.
