University of Roehampton

What you will study

Religious Education (RE) at Roehampton provides a context in which to ask searching questions; engage with meaning; reflect on experience; and listen to both the self and others as we contemplate profound issues at the heart of human experience. RE is enormously important, hugely stimulating, and often surprising, and as a subject, it represents a crucial element within the school curriculum. We will work together to explore a number of big questions associated with the nature of religious beliefs and other worldviews, their importance in shaping the lives of young people, the changing place of RE within schools, and the strategies that can be best employed to ensure that it is taught imaginatively and assessed effectively. As we do so, they will have opportunities themselves to enquire into belief, reason, and feelings through dialogue couched in mutual trust and respect. A central feature of our provision is the opportunity for interaction with a wide range of RE professionals and representatives of Buddhism Christianity, Hinduism, Humanism, Islam, Judaism and Sikhism. Our London location is, of course, particularly rich in its religious and cultural diversity and we are able to take full advantage of it. they are encouraged to develop theyr own knowledge and understanding not only of the role, nature and purpose of RE itself, but also of a variety of religious traditions and worldviews as well as contemporary secular philosophies. Training is possible in collaboration with an excellent range of partner schools to ensure everyone enjoys a successful teaching practice. All mentors in schools are experienced and there are opportunities to work within a variety of cultural and geographical environments. We have strong links with both community schools and faith schools, including those within the Anglican and Catholic traditions, as well as a range of other state schools and some independent schools.
