What you will study

This course is designed to keep pace with the rapidly evolving media industry, ensuring students are well-prepared for careers in communications. The programme focuses on developing practical communication skills that enable students to effectively engage across a variety of multimedia channels.

Through a combination of theoretical study and practical application, students will gain essential knowledge and hands-on experience in both media and communications. The course includes exciting new modules that cover the full spectrum of media skills, from writing and podcasting to video production, all aimed at preparing graduates for roles in the media sector. Students will further enhance their multimedia skills through coursework and placements, gaining valuable real-world experience in producing content for online and broadcast platforms.

Students will benefit from being taught by tutors with extensive experience in the communications industry, many of whom have worked with high-profile organisations such as the BBC, ITV News, and other media outlets. This allows students to hear the latest industry insights, receive expert advice, and build valuable industry contacts. Recent experiences have included visits to the BBC’s flagship political programme Sunday and participation in a Q&A with renowned political journalist Laura Kuenssberg.

Ranked highly in industry-relevant categories, this course offers excellent career prospects. It is ranked in the top two for Journalism in the Daily Mail University Guide 2026 and the top 20 for career prospects in Media and Film Studies in the Guardian University Guide 2025.

The programme’s structure provides a solid foundation in media and communications skills in the first year, covering key areas such as writing, podcasting, and basic video production. In the second year, students can choose to focus on public relations (PR), scriptwriting, or further develop their audio production skills. In the final year, students will work on a long-term project for a media organisation, applying the skills they’ve learned in a professional context.

The PR modules provide students with the opportunity to join a student-run communications agency, where they can work on real-life media and communication challenges for actual clients. This hands-on experience prepares students for the demands of the media industry and helps build their professional portfolios.
