Integrated Foundation - Bachelor of Arts (Honours) - Commercial Photography
University of Derby - Derby
What you will study
The BA (Hons) Commercial Photography with Foundation Year offers a progressive and ethically responsible approach to contemporary commercial photography practice and its associated industries. The programme focuses on developing the technical and professional skills required to work in the field while encouraging innovation beyond conventional commercial practices, enabling the creation of new visual languages suited to contemporary and future-focused clients.
This degree is one of the few specifically commercial photography programmes in Britain that supports professional practice from the outset. Students are encouraged to undertake commercial photographic work during their studies and to integrate this work into ongoing portfolio development. Specialist mentoring is provided throughout the programme, covering areas such as building a professional identity, marketing and media, client engagement, pitch deck presentations, production and project management, communication and engagement skills, and the final presentation of work to clients or intended audiences.
The programme is delivered through a combination of practice-led workshops, lectures, seminars, tutorial support, and national and international study visits. Throughout the course, students are supported by actively practising and research-engaged photographic lecturers, as well as industry professionals. Through intensive creative exploration and supported risk-taking, graduates develop as autonomous practitioners and independent professionals with distinctive approaches that set them apart from typical industry expectations.
