Bachelor of Science - Physics - Space Science
University of Leicester
What you will study
Physics is the study of matter, energy and the fundamental forces that govern the universe, from the tiniest subatomic particles to vast galaxies. Space science is the study of space technology and its use to explore the Solar System. The University of Leicester has a world-class reputation in space science, having contributed to numerous missions launched by NASA, ESA and other space agencies. In fact, we can proudly boast that, since 1967, there has never been a moment when there was not at least one piece of Leicester-built equipment in orbit! Planetary probes with direct Leicester involvement include Cassini (Saturn), Juno (Jupiter), BepiColombo (Mercury) and ExoMars.
As well as Physics with Space Science, we offer three other specialist physics degrees and a more general course, all available as a three-year BSc or a four-year MPhys. This allows you to tailor your study to your own interests or to develop a broad knowledge across the whole subject. All five courses are similar enough through their first two years that you can switch between them. So if you like the sound of space science but are not yet sure that’s where your passion for physics lies, this degree gives you two years to explore your options.
Leicester is Britain’s space city, home to two unique locations. Space Park Leicester is a world-leading hub for space research, innovation and enterprise. Founded through a collaboration between the University of Leicester, industry partners and government, SPL’s mission is to push the boundaries of space exploration, satellite technology and Earth observation to benefit society and the economy.
