Georgian College - Barrie
In this program, students gain knowledge and skills to become helping professionals in social services. They examine beliefs, develop communication skills, and promote social justice, human dignity, and equity. Skills in interviewing, relationship building, group leadership, family work, and evidence-based decision-making are emphasized. Faculty promote equity and inclusion, focusing on Indigenous awareness and gerontological issues, with community engagement through service learning and field placements. Graduates understand the values and ethics that empower individuals and communities, meeting educational requirements for Social Service Worker registration in Ontario. Employment opportunities exist in community mental health, government, and non-profit agencies, covering areas like children and families, shelters, mental health services, employment resources, seniors’ programs, housing, and education services.
