What you will study

The BSc Bioveterinary Sciences with Placement Year degree at the University of Reading equips students with the expertise and industry experience necessary for careers in animal-related fields. Bioveterinary scientists contribute significantly to society by promoting sustainability and food security through the optimal health and welfare of farmed animals, applying scientific principles to the care of domestic and captive animal populations, and conducting research at the intersection of animal biology, veterinary science, and animal management.

At Reading, students develop specialised knowledge, research abilities, and laboratory skills essential for addressing global challenges. According to the National Student Survey 2024, 92% of students reported that teaching staff were effective in explaining concepts, 100% felt the course challenged them to achieve their best, and another 100% believed it developed the knowledge and skills necessary for their future. The Department of Animal Sciences had a 71% response rate from final-year students.

The University is ranked 7th in the UK for Animal Science and Agriculture (Guardian University Guide 2026), and the programme provides a strong foundation in biosciences, covering areas such as cell biology, biochemistry, physiology, microbiology, health and welfare sciences, behavioural studies, and nutrition. Students learn to apply this knowledge in managing animal health and welfare across various environments, including farms, zoos, and homes.

In addition to scientific knowledge, students gain valuable transferable skills—such as teamwork, problem-solving, data analysis, and statistical interpretation—that are highly valued by employers.

The four-year course includes an integrated placement year, providing hands-on experience within the animal or veterinary industries. A dedicated placements team offers support in securing suitable roles and enhancing CV and interview skills. Previous students have completed placements with organisations such as Danisco Animal Nutrition (DuPont), Paignton Zoo, Chester Zoo, Jersey Zoo, and the RSPCA.
