What you will study
Students will gain knowledge of how drugs are formulated into medicines and used in the management of disease. They will learn professional communication skills that will enable them to effectively advise both consumers and health professionals about medicines and healthy behaviors.
This four-year degree is students first step to becoming a pharmacist. It prepares students for the compulsory one-year internship that they will need to complete in order to gain Australia-wide registration as a pharmacist.
Once students have successfully completed the degree and the internship, they will be registered to practice in any area of pharmacy in Australia, including community or hospital pharmacy.
Alternatively, this degree provides students with a foundation from which they can progress with further studies, to achieve a range of other career opportunities.
Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology pharmacy students will benefit from a supportive academic community with diverse research strengths. They will be able to gain real-world experience through work placements in both hospital and community pharmacies.
Students will develop a sound scientific base in studies that include biology, chemistry, biochemistry, biostatistics, physiology, genetics, microbiology and immunology, together with an understanding of the social factors that influence health.
In-depth knowledge of pharmacology, pharmacy practice, pharmaceutics and therapeutics is gained, together with an understanding of drug development, research skills and the option to study business if interested.
Upon successful completion of the Bachelor of Pharmacy (Honors) Program students can apply to commence supervised practice in an intern training program. To successfully complete the Program and enter internship, they will progressively develop towards the program learning outcomes: • Demonstrate professional behavior and accountability • Research, critically evaluate and apply evidence in professional practice • Demonstrate team and leadership skills to optimize practice • Demonstrate social responsibility to improve healthcare • Communicate effectively for the delivery of patient-centered care • Identify areas for personal development to improve competency • Apply pharmaceutical, medication and health knowledge and skills to improve patient and population health • Formulate, prepare, and supply medications and therapeutic product
