What you will study
The BA (Hons) Economics degree is accredited by the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA), providing additional awards and/or exemptions toward professional body memberships. The programme features live consultancy projects with employers, offering students the opportunity to address real challenges faced by businesses. Learning is enriched through access to the Financial Markets Lab, which simulates the pace and dynamics of a trading floor. Optional placement years and summer internships, as well as opportunities for international study trips, further enhance the academic experience.
The course develops forward-thinking economists with strong strategic vision and analytical capability. It provides a solid grounding in economic theory, equipping students to work confidently with economic data and undertake research and analysis to meet professional standards required for organisational success.
A wide range of activities is available to help strengthen analytical and professional skills, including consultancy projects, investment portfolio creation, participation in business panel debates, broadcast interview practice and the presentation of economic analysis at conferences.
Employer engagement is embedded throughout the programme to help students build the complete skill set required of applied economists. Real-world problem solving supports a deeper understanding of the contemporary business environment. Optional year-long placements or summer internships are encouraged and supported, offering insight into how economic analysis can enhance organisational performance and boosting professional profiles. Previous students have undertaken placements in roles such as data analyst. In the second year, students may also apply for the Undergraduate Research Scholarship Scheme, with successful proposals receiving bursary support.
