Integrated Foundation - Bachelor of Arts (Honours) - Criminology and Sociology

University of Derby - Derby

What you will study

The BA (Hons) Criminology and Sociology with Foundation Year explores the connection between crime and society, providing insight into the social factors that shape behaviour, beliefs, and attitudes.

The programme integrates criminology and sociology to examine why people commit crimes and the wider social influences involved, including inequality, prejudice, and substance abuse. It also considers the impact of crime on local communities and broader society, encouraging practical application of learning to support positive change within communities. Students have the opportunity to develop research skills and apply them in real-world working contexts, including through engagement with the Social Justice Hub.

The degree equips graduates with the skills to pursue careers in national or local government, the charity and voluntary sectors, or social and health services. Emphasising real-world relevance, the programme addresses contemporary issues while developing strong research and analytical skills to evaluate criminal behaviour and responses to it.

Collaborative projects with local and national community organisations allow students to provide research and solutions to pressing societal challenges. Study visits and field trips to courts, prisons, police forces, and youth offender training centres further enhance understanding of organisational practice and the criminal justice system.
