Overview

The Art Department (Fine Arts and Graphic Communications) provides comprehensive, coherent, integrated and cumulative studies in foundation courses (2D, 3D, drawing and photography) intermediate studio courses (drawing, painting and ceramics), art appreciation and art history courses, and graphic communications courses (design, software-based illustration, page layout, photo manipulation and animation). Students are offered several pathways to success. These include a local A.A. degree with a focus in either fine arts or graphic communications, a certificate in graphic communications, and general education courses that meet transfer requirements to the UC or CSU systems.

To achieve the Associate in Arts in Studio Arts for Transfer students must (1) complete the 27-30 units of Studio Arts degree major emphasis requirements; (2) fulfill requirements of either the CSU-General Education; and/or The Intersegmental General Education Transfer Curriculum (IGETC) (3) complete 60 semester units college transfer level units; and (4) obtain a minimum grade point average of 2.0. Note: students must earn a “C” or better in all courses required in the major area of emphasis.

Program Level Student Learning Outcomes: • Demonstrate appropriate and safe practices in various two-dimensional media, three-dimensional media, and computer-based studio environments. • Present, explain and justify their conceptual design solutions using the vocabulary of design elements and principles, and critique the solutions of others in a thoughtful, constructive manner. • Research and synthesize examples of historical and cultural products with their own ideas in order to improve their creative and conceptualization processes.
