Combined Degree - Bachelor of Business Administration (Honours) & Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) - Civil Engineering (EE)

Program Description Unlike traditional business schools that expect students to choose a specialization early on, the 2+2 program structure of the Ivey Honours of Business Administration (HBA) offers students the freedom to explore their academic interests before choosing their career options. In the first two years, students can study in any faculty or program. This opportunity to gain new life experiences ensures that HBA students and their classmates bring diverse and more seasoned perspectives to their business education. The combination of a deep knowledge of business and another academic or professional field makes for a strong career foundation. Students can apply their first two years of university study at Western to two degrees.

Students in this program will have the option to complete a four year Honours Bachelor of Business Administration (HBA) or to study for five years and combine the HBA with an Honours Bachelor of Engineering. While in their first year at Ivey (HBA 1), students will apply for one of the combined degree programs. If admitted, they will spend their fourth and fifth years of university studying a combination of business courses and required courses in their second degree area. In five years, they will have completed two degrees.

All Engineering students will complete a common first year, meaning all students take the same courses allowing them to experience various disciplines of engineering before deciding on an area of specialization. After completing the common first year, students will enroll in one of nine programs. During the common first year, students will solve real engineering problems. They will be provided with the fundamentals needed for success in upper years, while exploring various engineering disciplines.

After completing Western Engineering’s Common First Year, they can enroll in the Civil Engineering program. In the third year of study, students will have the opportunity to choose one of the following options: • Structural Engineering • Environmental Engineering • International Development with Structural or Environmental Engineering

Structural Engineering: In our established Structural Engineering option, students take courses in areas such as Structural Theory and Design, Reinforced and Prestressed Concrete Design, Steel Design, Structural Dynamics, Finite Element Design and Tall Buildings, Soil Mechanics, Business, Engineering Ethics, Sustainable Development and Law. Environmental Engineering: Environmental engineers minimize society’s impact on the environment, playing an integral role in designing a sustainable future. They develop solutions for a wide range of environmental problems including adapting to the effects of climate change, restoring polluted environments, and managing increased demand for clean water.

International Development with Structural or Environmental Engineering: These options introduce students to the complex societal, environmental, political and economic issues associated with building safer communities in Canada and in the developing world. A centerpiece of the International Development option is the Summer Community Development Placement and Design Project where students have an opportunity to work for four months in developing countries, or in-need communities in Canada. NOTE: Please note the English scores listed are minimum requirements. Meeting the minimums does not guarantee admission. Students with low English scores may be admitted to the English BOOST Program, a 9 week training program for conditional admission to their chosen program.
