Integrated Foundation - Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) - Motorsport Engineering
University of Derby - Derby
What you will study
The BEng (Hons) Motorsport Engineering course is designed for students who want to make their mark in the highly competitive global motorsport industry. It offers essential technical and digital skills alongside practical experience, preparing graduates for success in one of the most exciting engineering fields. The programme aims to develop innovative and resourceful motorsport engineers, equipping them with the capabilities to work with top teams and high-profile manufacturers.
For those uncertain about which branch of engineering to pursue, the first year provides a broad foundation across all engineering disciplines, helping students gain the multi-disciplinary skills and knowledge that employers demand. In the second year, students can choose to specialize in either BEng (Hons) Mechanical Engineering, BEng (Hons) Electrical and Electronic Engineering, or continue on the BEng (Hons) Motorsport Engineering track.
The course is professionally accredited by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers on behalf of the Engineering Council to the Partial Chartered Engineer (Partial CEng) level. This accreditation means that with further learning (such as an accredited MSc programme), graduates can meet the academic requirements to become a fully Chartered Engineer.
Students will have the opportunity to hone their skills in state-of-the-art facilities, including dedicated workshop spaces and advanced computer labs, while studying a wide range of vehicles and systems. Practical, hands-on experience is enhanced by involvement in extra-curricular activities like Formula Student and the Radical SR1 Cup Championship, both of which offer challenging real-world engineering applications. Additionally, students can gain invaluable industry insights at exhibitions and race meetings, providing exposure to the motorsport world.
The programme also offers a Foundation Year option, which is ideal for those looking to strengthen their skills, knowledge, and confidence before advancing to their honours degree. This additional year is particularly useful for students who may be transitioning into engineering from other fields or need additional academic support. Importantly, the Foundation Year is continuous, meaning students won’t need to reapply after completing the first year and can seamlessly progress into the rest of the programme.
With excellent industry connections and hands-on opportunities, the BEng (Hons) Motorsport Engineering course provides the perfect launchpad for a successful career in motorsport engineering.
