College Diploma - Early Childhood Education (ECE)

The Early Childhood Education program at Western Community College prepares students to become proficient educators in early learning settings. The curriculum emphasizes an understanding of developmental milestones, the creation of effective curricula, and the assessment of children’s progress.

The program includes in-depth study of child development and learning theories, along with curriculum planning and assessment strategies. It also incorporates field placements that provide practical, hands-on experience in early learning environments, ensuring that graduates are well prepared to foster positive learning experiences for young children.

Graduates of the program may pursue a variety of career paths. These include roles such as Early Childhood Educator, leading educational activities in preschools and childcare centers; Child Development Consultant, advising on programs and policies that support child development; and Family Support Worker, assisting families in nurturing their children’s growth and learning. Graduates may also choose to start their own daycare and pursue entrepreneurship within the early childhood education field.

To work as an Early Childhood Educator in a licensed childcare facility in British Columbia, individuals are required to be certified by the Early Childhood Educator (ECE) Registry. The ECE program offered by Western Community College is recognized by the ECE Registry. Upon graduation, students must apply for certification through the ECE Registry.
