The Health Care Aide Term helps students develop the knowledge and skills needed to become a health care worker who, under the supervision of a nurse, assists hospital patients, personal care home residents, or home care clients. Students learn about the expectations and responsibilities of the role and the knowledge and skills required to be a Health Care Aide. They study related topics, including interpersonal communications, growth and development, gerontological care, and home care. Students have opportunities to gain experience in simulated laboratory settings at the College and actual practice settings in health care agencies. The Health Unit Clerk Term helps to acquire the knowledge and skills required to function as part of a health care team. Students learn the roles and responsibilities of a Health Unit Clerk (HUC), including: • Maintaining patient and unit records • Processing physician orders • Processing diagnostic and laboratory orders • Managing unit supplies.
This program has work practicum (480 Clinical Hours) as an integral part of the program that provides students with an opportunity to test skills learned in the classroom and to expand their knowledge through related work experience.
