Master of Science - Sustainable and Ethical Business Management
University of Derby - Derby
What you will study
In light of a rapidly changing global landscape, traditional approaches to business are no longer considered viable. There is now a clear shift from profit alone towards purpose, planet and people as core business values. Whether organisations aim to reach Net Zero, embed environmental sustainability or strengthen social responsibility, all businesses must realign with these emerging priorities. Within this programme, students develop the mindset and skills required to be at the forefront of change and to support the transition towards the ‘new normal’ for modern organisations. As a result, businesses will increasingly seek future managers capable of building resilience and guiding sustainable transformation. The programme therefore teaches students not only how to manage a business responsibly, but also how to anticipate market developments and implement the changes necessary to lead businesses into a sustainable future. Within this programme, students learn to become responsible business practitioners by exploring why and how businesses can be run effectively through an integrated sustainable, ethical and socially responsible lens. The programme is designed to educate and upskill learners as effective and responsible leaders and business managers—an expertise that is increasingly vital and urgently required by organisations across all sectors. The programme provides opportunities for students to apply their skills in real-world contexts through a ‘student as practitioner’ approach. This enables them to work directly with businesses and to experience first-hand the challenges and opportunities that organisations face today. Through course activities, students learn how to identify and implement responsible solutions that support businesses in transitioning effectively toward a globally sustainable economy.
Employer-led briefs, simulations and industry case studies offer valuable insights into the pivotal transition required across industries. These experiences help students become work-ready in line with the evolving expectations of businesses responding to global challenges. In addition, students receive Carbon Literacy certification through the Carbon Literacy Project and develop key professional sustainability competencies, values and a responsible mindset. These qualities are central to becoming an effective manager, leader and global citizen. By participating in this programme, students join a growing international movement striving not only for a sustainable future but for a better one for all.
