Overview
The MSc in Sustainable Urban Planning and Design develops advanced knowledge and practical expertise in creating sustainable, inclusive, and healthy urban environments. The programme enables students to critically evaluate the challenges facing contemporary cities and assess the effectiveness of planning strategies, design approaches, and policy interventions aimed at addressing environmental, social, and economic sustainability issues.
Recognising the vital role cities play as centres of economic activity, culture, and community life, the programme explores how urban planning and design can contribute to building more resilient and sustainable futures. Students gain a strong foundation in planning principles while developing the analytical, research, and design skills required to address complex urban challenges in diverse international contexts.
The curriculum combines traditional planning competencies with interdisciplinary perspectives, equipping graduates to respond to evolving sustainability priorities. A distinctive Sustainable Places studio module provides opportunities to apply design thinking and hands-on methodologies to real-world urban issues. Engagement with industry practitioners further enhances learning by connecting planning theories with professional practice and contemporary challenges in the field.
