Bachelor of Science - Psychology and Criminal Justice (with International Foundation Program)
University of Roehampton
What you will study
Students will learn to apply psychology to criminal investigation and study a degree that prepares them for a career in the criminal justice system, or for further study to become a Forensic Psychologist.
Students will study forensic psychology, understanding what motivates criminal behaviour and how criminals are treated within the justice system. Students will learn about the criminal mind and how individual differences relates to criminal behaviour. Students will also study neuroscience, discovering how areas of the brain and brain damage can lead to riskier behaviour. Students will apply this understanding of psychology and criminology directly to the criminal justice system, learning how the legal system works and how it treats offenders and victims of crime.
This degree is strongly focused on students' career and employability. When students graduate, their understanding of the human mind, criminology and the criminal justice system will allow them to excel in a range of careers. The University of Roehampton's graduates have gone onto work for the Ministry of Justice, Her Majesty’s Prison and Probation Service, charities supporting prisoners, people with convictions and their children and families, mental health services, the NHS and Education.
This course also has the option of a one year paid work placement, to boost students' employability even further.
The University of Roehampton's modules and assessments are based on real-world applications, allowing students to apply psychological and criminological theories to real-life cases and further increase their professional skills. Students will spend time criminal profiling, writing case study reports, and discussing and debating criminal justice responses to build confidence in applying their own knowledge and judgement. Students will also develop valuable skills in research and data analysis, teamwork, communication, negotiation and presentations, which will be an asset in their career.
Students will be learning from enthusiastic and supportive academic tutors, who are also practitioners and involved in the latest research. They’ll teach students in the University of Roehampton's state-of-the-art psychological facilities, giving students first-hand experience using the latest equipment, including their EEGs to record brain activity, eye-tracking software, access to an fMRI, and brain stimulation therapy, including Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS).
The University of Roehampton’s BSc Psychology has been accredited and commended by the British Psychological Society (BPS) for many years. Their recently reviewed and enhanced programme is pending BPS re-accreditation, following their 5 year curriculum review due for early spring. The programme that students will study has been designed to meet the BPS criteria.
This course offers all students the option of a one-year paid work placement, to boost their employability even further. If students choose this route, they will take the placement following year two of the course, and then return to complete their degree.
