What you will study

Program Description The BSc (Hons) Applied Biosciences degree explores life at all levels from chemicals, molecules and cells to organ systems. Students will also explore human health and illness and how they are managed in the context of contemporary research, as well as how populations, communities and the environment influence health and illness.

Course content and assessments have been designed to help students develop both theoretical knowledge and understanding, as well as the practical skills to enhance their career and academic opportunities.

Each year, the course is reviewed to ensure it includes the major causes of illness and death globally, as researched by the World Health Organisation (WHO) as well as the major causes of sickness absence from the workplace, to give students a rounded understanding of the way disease affects human life.

This course offers students the option to undertake a Professional Placement Year or Study Abroad Year. If they wish to do so, students can opt to take the Professional Placement Year module or the Study Abroad Year module which both typically run for a full academic year between years 2 and 3 of the course. Students are able to progress onto the relevant module if they have successfully completed the first two years of the course (i.e. having accumulated 240 credits) and provided that they confirm their interest in undertaking this option before the end of second year, typically in August.

While the Professional Placement Year and Study Abroad Year modules students undertake are non-credit bearing but do not incur any additional tuition fees, if successfully completed, these modules will appear on their final academic transcript. In addition, if they complete this year, they will also gain an enhanced degree award title as the additional suffix of “With Professional Enhancement” if they've gone on a work placement and “With International Enhancement” if they've gone on a study abroad program will be added ( subject to relevant assessments) .

The Talent Team can provide students with a wide range of support services in order to help them apply for a placement opportunity. Past students have had internships in London, Birmingham, Amsterdam, Berlin, Stuttgart and Bologna.

Please note that placement or study abroad opportunities are not guaranteed and that any such opportunities referred to on this webpage may be subject to additional costs (e.g. travel, visas and accommodation etc.), competitive application, availability and/or meeting any applicable visa requirements.
