Bachelor of Science (Honours) - Animation for Games
Edinburgh Napier University - Merchiston Campus
What you will study
The Games Industry is the world’s largest entertainment sector, projected to reach a value of $256 billion by 2025. With over 2.5 billion people playing games globally and ongoing advancements in both hardware and software, gaming continues to expand as a recreational, educational, and therapeutic activity.
The BSc Animation for Games degree is designed for individuals seeking the knowledge and skills required for a career in this dynamic industry. It offers students the opportunity to build a professional portfolio, whether by developing expertise in a specialist area for roles in larger team-based organisations or by cultivating a broader skill set suitable for independent freelance work.
Throughout the course, students gain an in-depth understanding of the theory, development, and application of visual and audio assets in the context of animation for games. They develop expertise in bringing narrative concepts to life through the design of both 2D and 3D assets, as well as through the integration of interactive components using game engines and audio middleware.
The programme also explores the cultural landscape surrounding new types of games, enabling students to critically engage with and explore emerging trends and technologies in the field. Areas of study include 3D modelling and animation, scripting for interactive media, interactive audio, visual effects storytelling, 2D motion graphics, and collaborative creative practice.
Students are supported in developing a strong portfolio and are given the chance to focus on specialist roles through an honours project. Collaborative work on creative projects further enhances their readiness for industry roles or entrepreneurial ventures within the gaming sector.
