Master of Arts - Dramatherapy

University of Derby - Derby

What you will study

The MA Dramatherapy is a master’s programme approved by the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC). Successful completion of the course enables graduates to apply for registration with the HCPC as a registered arts therapist (dramatherapist), subject to meeting the Council’s requirements. Registration with the HCPC is a legal requirement for those wishing to practise as a dramatherapist in the UK.

The programme enhances understanding of theatre within the therapeutic process, with a strong focus on improvisation and the adaptation of therapeutic interventions to meet the needs of individuals and groups. Students undertake a substantial piece of independent research in an area of personal interest, while further developing knowledge of psychological processes and exploring the formation of an individual therapeutic approach. Throughout the course, critical reflection on practice is encouraged, with particular attention given to the impact and consequences of therapeutic interventions and the development of self-awareness as a core facilitation skill.

Innovation is actively supported through the exploration of a wide range of theatre-based and improvisational methodologies, enabling effective responses to diverse client needs across a variety of professional settings. The course also encourages the development of individual interests and creative practice, using dramatic art forms to design original models suitable for a broad range of dramatherapy interventions.
