Bachelor of Arts (Honours) - Education Studies and Economics

University of Derby - Derby

What you will study

The BA (Hons) Education Studies and Economics degree integrates economic theory with a multidisciplinary social science perspective to explore contemporary educational curricula, policy and trends. The programme examines education through the lenses of history, sociology, philosophy and psychology, investigating how traditional and progressive approaches—often viewed as contrasting—can complement one another to enhance educational practice.

The Economics element develops a strong understanding of key economic concepts and provides opportunities to apply theoretical knowledge to current economic data and live research projects. Students gain insight into contemporary economic issues within the UK and internationally, across both the private and public sectors.

Real-world experience is an integral part of the programme, with opportunities for a year-long economics placement, summer internships, or education placements designed to strengthen employability. These placements reflect an ethos of contributing positively to the community, providing transferable skills, practical experience and meaningful engagement with local organisations.

Teaching on the programme is research-informed, with staff who are active researchers and specialists in their fields. Their expertise shapes taught sessions, materials and classroom discussions, ensuring that content reflects the latest developments in both education and economics. Students are encouraged to pursue their own research interests through seminars and assignments, supporting their development as independent and active researchers.
