Bachelor of Arts (Honours) - English and Law

University of Derby - Derby

What you will study

The BA (Hons) English and Law programme at Derby combines two disciplines, enhancing graduate employability and providing the opportunity to develop expertise in both subject areas.

The course equips students with key skills required to succeed in the legal sector, including drafting, advocacy, interviewing, and negotiation. Law facilities are located at One Friar Gate Square in the heart of Derby’s city centre, featuring a replica Crown Courtroom, Custody Suite, and Student Legal Advice Centre. The programme is closely networked with the legal profession, providing opportunities for work internships and professional mentoring.

In addition to legal training, the programme engages students with literary, critical, and cultural theory, fostering a highly nuanced and sophisticated approach to the analysis of literature, language, and culture.

English modules explore diverse topics, including the evolution of fantasy, the representation of crime, the legacy of Empire, cultural politics, existentialist writing, classical myth, and the 19th-century realist novel. Opportunities to broaden experience include work-based learning projects, study visits to cultural and heritage institutions, and lectures and seminars delivered by guest speakers.
