Overview

Focusing on current research and practice, the Psychology with Forensic Investigation degree covers psychological theories and processes within the criminal justice system, and will give you an in-depth understanding of the UK criminal investigation process. Covering a vast range of topics, this versatile course teaches the concepts and principles of psychology by exploring key theories and applying them to criminal investigation settings.

Students will be based within the Department of Psychology and will learn theories and practical skills covering a range of psychological approaches through state-of-the-art facilities. Importantly, students will acquire generic skills which are readily transferable to future careers, such as online skills, critical thinking, project management, presentation skills and an understanding of professional practice. During their degree, students will have a range of different assessment methods, which are designed to enhance their repertoire of academic skills as well as being applicable to the development of key vocational-orientated skills.

This course will help students develop a high level of understanding and insight into empirical and theoretical issues within all areas of psychology, with a specific focus on the application of psychology in forensic contexts. Additionally, students will learn from experts in the forensic investigation about the criminal investigation process and relevant legal issues. Therefore, when they graduate, students will acquire a range of key knowledge, research skills and methods to investigate human behaviour and cognitive processes within the criminal justice system.

In this course, students can benefit from opting to take a 4 week placement in the 3 year course or a 30 week placement in industry after the second year, extending their course by one year, although this is not mandatory. This will give students essential real-world experience, placing theory and skills into practice, and enabling them to harvest a network of professional contacts – all of which are vital for successfully launching a career. In addition, students will have the opportunity to gain valuable research experience by working on staff research projects during the second-year and final-year of the course.
