Overview
The MSc International Finance and Investment is designed for students at the beginning of a career in finance. It aims to develop an integrated and critically informed understanding of international investment and finance. By combining knowledge gained through a previous degree with a specialised master’s qualification, the programme can broaden graduates’ career opportunities.
The programme develops the specialist skills required to apply finance and econometric theory in areas such as quantitative analysis, financial research, international financial markets and institutions, investment, derivatives and risk management. It also strengthens transferable skills relevant to careers in corporate finance, banking, financial markets, investment and quantitative finance research.
During Year 1, students complete six taught modules covering investment, econometrics and finance. In Semester 1 of Year 2, students undertake the Business Clinic PG Group Consultancy Project, working on a genuine business challenge faced by an external organisation.
In Semester 2 of Year 2, students select one of three options: a master’s dissertation, a Master’s Management Enquiry or an Applied Management Work Investigation. Eligibility for the Applied Management Work Investigation is subject to achieving a mark of at least 80% in the Business Clinic PG Group Consultancy Project.
This master’s programme is ideal for individuals with a passion for mathematics and quantitative finance who are seeking to build a rewarding career in financial research.
Building on undergraduate study in a quantitative subject, such as economics, accounting or engineering, the programme offers a research-oriented approach to finance and investment. Students explore specialist areas including econometrics and forecasting, financial markets and institutions, and investment and risk management while developing advanced analytical and evaluative skills.
Students make extensive use of the Bloomberg trading suite, gaining access to live data from financial markets around the world. This data, combined with advanced econometric software packages, is used to construct econometric models for forecasting, developing trading strategies and examining the implications of policy decisions for financial markets.
