Doctor of Architecture (9001)

Research in the area of architecture is carried out through specialist centres. The majority of academic staff are affiliated with one or more of these centres, and research students are expected to join small teams working on specific problems.

Doctor of Architecture, in which supervision is offered across a range of research areas and themes. These include city depiction, design, and description; architectural pedagogy and design studio culture; digital architecture, fabrication, and design research; rethinking sustainable practice through adaptation and conservation; visualisation, augmented reality, 3D modelling, integrated project delivery, and virtualisation; architectural design as a cultural product; the city as consumer; and structure as space, encompassing architecture, geometry, and technology.

A member of academic staff with expertise in the chosen field is responsible for guiding and supporting the research programme, and the research student becomes part of an active academic community.

A PhD is defined as an original contribution to knowledge, with originality and innovation forming a core ethos within architectural research. Unlike taught programmes, a research degree requires students to take primary responsibility for directing their own learning, supported by a supervisory team.
