Master of Arts (Honours) - Portuguese (R500)

The University of Edinburgh

What you will study

Portuguese, one of the world's ten most widely spoken languages, is estimated to have approximately 234 million speakers. The countries where it is spoken, from Brazil to Mozambique, possess remarkably diverse and culturally rich societies.

At the University of Edinburgh, students have the opportunity to cultivate advanced spoken and written proficiency in Portuguese, while also acquiring a comprehensive cultural education that is highly valued by employers of graduate-level positions.

In addition to receiving intensive language instruction, students will be fully immersed in a wide array of literature, film, music, and arts from Europe, South America, and Lusophone Africa, all explored within their historical contexts.

The University of Edinburgh program provides a strong foundation for learners with varying levels of Portuguese experience, including those who are just beginning their language journey. Many of our graduates initially had no prior knowledge of the language. By the conclusion of the program, students will have developed a range of linguistic skills and essential intercultural competencies.
