Master of Science - Civil Engineering and Construction Management
University of Derby - Derby
What you will study
The MSc Civil Engineering and Construction Management combines in-depth technical knowledge with practical expertise and strategic management skills, preparing graduates for rewarding careers across the global construction and infrastructure sectors. The programme holds non-technical accreditation from leading professional bodies, including the Institution of Structural Engineers, the Institution of Civil Engineers, the Chartered Institution of Civil Engineering Surveyors, the Permanent Way Institution, the Chartered Institution of Highways and Transportation, the Institute of Highway Engineers, and the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB). It meets the Further Learning requirements for registration as a Chartered Engineer (CEng), subject to applicants holding an appropriately accredited undergraduate degree. The course may also be taken as a Postgraduate Certificate or Postgraduate Diploma as stand-alone awards.
The curriculum addresses critical challenges facing the industry, such as flood risk engineering management, environmental risk and responsibility, sustainable development, project planning, value engineering, and risk management. Learning is applied through real-world projects and scenarios, ensuring relevance to professional practice in both civil engineering and construction management contexts. Alongside technical content, the programme develops key transferable skills, including scholarly writing, research, critical thinking, independent learning, communication, and problem-solving, supporting ongoing Continuing Professional Development (CPD) and further advanced study.
A flexible combination of core and optional modules allows the programme to be tailored to areas central to creating and maintaining sustainable built environments, from major property developments to large-scale infrastructure projects such as highways and railways. The degree is accredited by the Joint Board of Moderators (JBM) on behalf of the Engineering Council as meeting the academic requirement for Further Learning for Chartered Engineer registration, representing professional standards upheld by around 100,000 engineers worldwide.
