Bachelor of Arts - Cultural Studies (UZ)
Wilfrid Laurier University - Waterloo
What you will study
Cultural Studies provides an in-depth examination of popular and everyday culture. This discipline analyzes art, literature, science, technology, media, and popular texts in relation to the significance of daily life and their influence on historical developments. At Laurier, the courses introduce students to innovative methods of “reading” culture that acknowledge the complexity of the world. Students will explore topics such as popular music, visual culture, the culture of work and play, youth subcultures, and the role of popular culture in social change. Upon graduation, students will be equipped to think critically about various aspects of culture as they relate to broader societal issues, including class, gender, sexuality, race, and power. They will develop critical insights into the contemporary world by examining how individuals live and engage with the culture surrounding them. Cultural competency is a highly sought-after skill by employers. Students will acquire the ability to effectively and critically engage with contemporary issues and communicate their understandings clearly to others. This preparation will enable students to pursue diverse careers that require innovative solutions to modern challenges. Note: This program must be completed in conjunction with another Bachelor of Arts program. Students can easily complement their studies with Communication Studies, English, Film Studies, Women and Gender Studies, or Global Studies, among others.
