What you will study
The Derby LLB programme offers students the option to pursue a broad-based degree or specialise through pathways in Company and Commercial Law, International and Comparative Law, International Business Law, or Social and Public Policy. The programme equips students with essential skills required to succeed in the legal sector, including drafting, advocacy, interviewing, and negotiation. It is a qualifying law degree that meets the criteria set by the Bar Standards Board and Solicitors Regulation Authority, providing a clear route toward a career as a solicitor or barrister. Strong connections with the legal profession offer opportunities for work internships and professional mentoring. Through the Community Legal Advice Service, students gain practical experience by assisting individuals who might otherwise have limited access to legal support. Specialist modules further enhance skills in entrepreneurship, creative thinking, problem-solving, team working, business acumen, and digital technology, broadening career prospects.
The LLB programme includes the option of a foundation year as part of the four-year study pathway. This foundation year helps strengthen academic skills, knowledge, and confidence, providing extensive support before progressing to the honours degree. It is particularly beneficial for those considering a career change or wishing to gain familiarity with new subject areas. The foundation year is continuous, allowing progression into the full degree without the need for reapplication.
The Derby LLB offers a comprehensive undergraduate legal education designed to reflect the evolving legal profession and enhance graduate employability. Students engage with core professional skills while gaining practical experience that brings theoretical learning to life. The programme also focuses on broader competencies required by modern lawyers, including legal technology, commercial awareness, entrepreneurship, strategic thinking, empathy, innovation, and creativity. This approach helps graduates stand out in the job market while exploring how legal knowledge can contribute to social justice and societal impact. The LLB provides flexibility and choice, enabling students to tailor their studies through specialist modules to achieve a named LLB award, according to their career interests and aspirations.
