These programs are tailored for students with relevant diploma or degree backgrounds who seek to specialize in the treatment of concurrent disorders and the support of individuals facing mental health and substance use challenges. Students cultivate a comprehensive skill set to deliver a client-centered and client-driven continuum of treatment for individuals with addiction issues. With a robust foundation in individual and group counseling skills, students examine individual, gender, and societal considerations, along with their treatment implications, through the lens of trauma-informed care. They practice motivational interviewing techniques, cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), and dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), while learning to align client needs with appropriate intervention options. Furthermore, students develop educational and prevention strategies aimed at designing, facilitating, and evaluating such tools. On completion of the program, student may find career opportunities in a variety of settings and job roles including addictions counsellors, substance use counsellors, chemical withdrawal management counsellors, addictions nurses, problem gambling counsellors, and attendants in residential, out-patient, and street-front treatment settings.
