Georgian College’s Health Informatics program equips students with the skills needed to succeed in the rapidly evolving digital health sector. Students gain knowledge and skills in health-care delivery, information technology, and data analysis. They explore clinical informatics, health information management, privacy and security, health-care systems, and information technology. Throughout the program, students gain hands-on experience through case studies and projects that address the complexities of emerging technologies in the health-care system. In the second semester, students complete a capstone course involving an industry project that introduces the stages of business analysis and change management in a real-world scenario. Upon graduation, students have the competencies and professional skills required to pursue opportunities in the health informatics field. The Health Informatics program prepares graduates to manage health-care data, improve patient care through technology, and support health-care decision-making processes. Students learn about electronic health record (EHR) systems, data security, and health-care analytics, which are essential in today’s digital health-care environment. This training prepares graduates for various health-care roles requiring specialized digital competencies. Graduates may find employment as privacy co-ordinators, training co-ordinators, clinical informatics co-ordinators, EMR/EHR analysts, or junior business analysts. Graduates develop the ability to evaluate organizational needs for health information systems technologies and analyze their effects on clinical and business workflows to recommend improvements. They can develop, implement, and evaluate health information management practices, policies, and processes that support client care, organizational goals, operations, and regulatory compliance. The program prepares graduates to analyze relevant local, national, and global health-care and health information management issues, trends, technologies, and standards to support health information systems and processes. Graduates can also implement and monitor compliance with legal health obligations and professional, ethical, and organizational standards. These competencies help ensure the privacy, security, and confidentiality of personal health information during access, retention, storage, extraction, and disposal. Graduates learn to apply business and systems analysis techniques to evaluate the effectiveness of health information systems technologies within health-related settings. They are also prepared to collaborate with interdisciplinary health-care teams to improve the collection, distribution, and security of health information while supporting positive client care outcomes. In addition, graduates can use project management tools and quality improvement methodologies to streamline health-care processes and improve patient outcomes in clinical settings. They are also able to identify, analyze, and present relevant data to support informed decision-making practices across the health-care continuum.
