Master of Philosophy within the Discipline of Music

Middlesex University

What you will study

The difference between an MPhil and a PhD, in essence, relates to the contribution that students make to existing knowledge on the research topic they have selected. A PhD contributes new knowledge beyond what is currently available, while an MPhil contributes new understanding of existing knowledge through a critical review or evaluation.

The taught elements of this course are integral to the degree, and a student's progression will be dependent on satisfactory progress.

This program is offered on a full-time or part-time basis.

The MPhil/PhD program allows for two routes:

• Text-based research project, with maximum word counts of 40,000 for an MPhil and 80,000 for a PhD. • Mixed mode, which includes visual research and textual research; students will need to provide an appropriate presentation of the visual research along with a text of up to 20,000 words for an MPhil or 40,000 words for a PhD.
