Bachelor of Science - Archaeology (V401)

Archaeology brings together the sciences and humanities to investigate the shared human past.

This course provides students with the opportunity to explore various scientific approaches in laboratories and in the field. They will analyze animal bones, human skeletons, and ancient materials using techniques ranging from ancient DNA studies to chemical analysis and isotopic studies. Additionally, students can delve into cultures from different time periods and geographical locations.

Students will engage in 20 days of archaeological fieldwork, participating in an approved excavation project or related placement in the UK or abroad.

In the core module, ‘Communicating the Past,’ students will explore effective ways to present heritage to the public by collaborating in groups to create interactive activities based on their studies. Recent project themes have included designing a museum exhibition on Europe’s Ice Age Hunter-Gatherers, creating an Archaeology Escape Room experience centered around Hadrian’s Wall, and developing a digital shipwreck tour of HMS Royal George.

Collaborating with the British Geological Survey and the University Nanoscale and Microscale Research Centre, the course offers artefact-handling sessions and educational projects at the on-campus University Museum.

Students are encouraged to pursue their interests by selecting modules from classics and archaeology, studying ancient languages, history, art, and culture. They may also choose subsidiary modules from other departments like history, philosophy, or history of art, or opt to study a language.

No prior scientific or archaeological experience is required to enroll in this course.
