What you will study
The Honours Bachelor of Technology – Sustainability is a four-year applied degree program that develops advanced technical expertise in sustainable technologies, preparing graduates to drive innovation and lead transformative change across diverse industries.
Program Highlights
The program responds to a growing industry demand for interdisciplinary sustainability professionals whose knowledge and skills span technology, environmental management, economics, and social impact. This interdisciplinary program integrates technical expertise in sustainable technologies—such as renewable energy, sustainable building design and operations, and resource management—with in-demand competencies in project management, policy development, regulatory understanding, and research. It equips graduates to take on leadership roles within the sustainability sector.
As an applied program, it emphasizes experiential learning through case study analysis, real-world problem-solving, an industry-based capstone project, a work-integrated learning term, and a culminating applied research project. Instruction is delivered in a hybrid format, with approximately one-third of instructional hours provided online (synchronously and/or asynchronously).
Learning Outcomes
Students acquire essential skills in environmental studies, sustainable technologies, management, leadership, communication, data analytics, project management, and policy-making, while exploring advanced topics such as renewable energy, sustainable building design, and natural resource management. The technical components of the program focus on a wide range of sustainability technologies, paired with deep knowledge of environmental science, policy, and regulatory frameworks. Students also develop strong project management and communication skills, preparing them to collaborate effectively with engineers, planners, architects, and environmental technologists in designing innovative solutions to global sustainability challenges.
Throughout the program, students engage with Indigenous knowledge and perspectives, as well as the principles of equity, diversity, and inclusion. They cultivate the insights and skills required to address sustainability challenges through inclusive and intersectional approaches that account for diverse experiences and impacts.
During the first three years, students participate in hands-on learning experiences, including community-based capstone projects, which prepare them for a work term placement. In the final year, students deepen their learning by addressing advanced sustainability challenges and integrating their knowledge in meaningful, applied ways. Through the final applied research project, students engage in thesis-level work on real-world issues, demonstrating their technical, analytical, and leadership skills in a practical and impactful context.
