University of Derby - Derby

What you will study

The BSc (Hons) Civil Engineering with Foundation Year provides a strong foundation in the core skills and knowledge sought by employers, including structures, fluids, geology, soil mechanics, surveying and materials. The programme combines lectures with real-life projects, case studies, site visits and field trips, enabling theory to be applied in practical contexts. Teaching is delivered by experienced civil engineering practitioners, supported by excellent facilities at the Markeaton Street site, including a modern STEM Centre.

The course offers opportunities to engage with local, real-world projects such as Down to Earth Derby’s New Commons, a nature-based regeneration initiative delivered in partnership with the Eden Project.

This project focuses on creating a community-managed garden at Sturgess Fields and provides experience in designing sustainable buildings and structures. After successful completion of the Foundation Year, students progress to the accredited BSc (Hons) Civil Engineering degree, which fully satisfies the academic requirements for registration as an Incorporated Engineer (IEng). With relevant professional experience and review, the programme can lead to membership of professional bodies including the Institution of Civil Engineers, the Institution of Structural Engineers, the Chartered Institution of Highways and Transportation, and the Institute of Highway Engineers.
